Book Description
Image and Video Encryption provides a unified overview of techniques for encryption of images and video data. This ranges from commercial applications like DVD or DVB to more research oriented topics and recently published material. This volume introduces different techniques from unified viewpoint, then evaluates these techniques with respect to their respective properties (e.g., security, speed.....). The authors experimentally compare different approaches proposed in the literature and include an extensive bibliography of corresponding published material.

Book Description
In very short time, peer-to-peer computing has evolved from an attractive new paradigm into an exciting and vibrant research field bringing together researchers from systems, networking, and theory. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Systems, IPTPS 2003, held in Berkeley, CA, USA in February 2003.The 27 revised papers presented together with an introductory summary of the discussions at the workshop were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and revision from initially 166 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on experience with P2P; theory and algorithms, P2P in a broader perspective; incentive and fairness; new DHT designs; naming, indexing, and searching; file sharing; and networking and applications.

Book Description
This timely volume reviews key issues and developments in the controversial area of public sector information (PSI). It addresses the fundamental themes, challenges and conflicts surrounding the access to, and use of, PSI in the new digital era. Using detailed empirical analyses and case studies from across Europe and the USA, the authors focus on the crucial policy, economic, legal and social issues. The public sector is the biggest single producer and holder of information including administrative and government documents, regulatory texts, political data and public registers. The authors demonstrate that this huge store of information is a key resource for a broad range of stakeholders such as citizens, civic organizations, private businesses and public sector agencies. They argue that charging the marginal cost of dissemination, a policy favored in the US, will lead to optimal economic growth in society and will far outweigh the immediate perceived benefits of aggressive cost recovery. They illustrate how open government information policies create significant economic advantages to society and are beneficial in both the short and long term for the general public, the private sector and for governments themselves. This is one of the first books devoted to addressing the new challenges of access to PSI and the role of public policy. The international contributors, including leading experts from Europe and the US, have produced an informative and coherent resource that will be of interest to scholars, students and decision-makers working in the fields of public policy, economics, political science, law and information technology.

About the Author
Edited by Georg Aichholzer, Institute of Technology Assessment, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria and Herbert Burkert, Research Centre for Information Law, University of St Gallen, Switzerland

Book Description
Even in the age of ubiquitous computing, the importance of the Internet will not change and we still need to solve conventional security issues. In addition, we need to deal with new issues such as security in the P2P environment, privacy issues in the use of smart cards, and RFID systems. Security and Privacy in the Age of Ubiquitous Computing addresses these issues and more by exploring a wide scope of topics. The volume presents a selection of papers from the proceedings of the 20th IFIP International Information Security Conference held from May 30 to June 1, 2005 in Chiba, Japan. Topics covered include cryptography applications, authentication, privacy and anonymity, DRM and content security, computer forensics, Internet and web security, security in sensor networks, intrusion detection, commercial and industrial security, authorization and access control, information warfare and critical protection infrastructure. These papers represent the most current research in information security, including research funded in part by DARPA and the National Science Foundation.

Book Description
The content industries consider Digital Rights Management (DRM) to contend with unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material, a practice that costs artists and distributors massively in lost revenue. Based on two conferences that brought together high-profile specialists in this area - scientists, lawyers, academics, and business practitioners - this book presents a broad, well-balanced, and objective approach that covers the entire DRM spectrum. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the book is structured using three different perspectives that cover the technical, legal, and business issues. This monograph-like anthology is the first consolidated book on this young topic.

Book Description
Peer-to-Peer computing is defined as a network-of any size, even across the Internet- where individual computers connect and exchange files and information directly without a central server. The most popular P2P application has been the sharing of MP3 files by websites such as Napster. Other services such as Gnutella have grown rapidly as well, with more than 40,000 computers connected through Gnutella at any one time. In addition, a new product-Groove-is one of the first P2P business applications that allows people in organizations to share files without the need for a client/server relationship.

From the Back Cover
Peer to Peer: Groundbreaking, Controversial, and Still Growing
Not every “next big thing” has lived up to its promise, but the technologies comprising peer-to-peer computing are definitely here to stay. Inside, Michael Miller walks you through this still-burgeoning field, showing you where it’s come from and where it’s headed.
Even in the age of ubiquitous computing, the importance of the Internet will not change and we still need to solve conventional security issues. In addition, we need to deal with new issues such as security in the P2P environment, privacy issues in the use of smart cards, and RFID systems. Security and Privacy in the Age of Ubiquitous Computing addresses these issues and more by exploring a wide scope of topics....

Starting with Napster and Gnutella, peer-to-peer systems became an integrated part of the Internet fabric attracting millions of users. According to recent evaluations, peer-to-peer traffic now exceeds Web traffic, once the dominant traffic on the Internet. While the most popular peer-to-peer applications remain file sharing and content distribution, new applications such as Internet telephony are emerging. Within just a few years, the huge popularity of peer-to-peer systems and the explosion of peer-to-peer research have created a large body of knowledge, but this book is the first textbook-like survey to provide an up-to-date and in-depth introduction to the field.

Network design and routing in peer-to-peer networks and mobile ad hoc networks

Peer-to-peer networks and mobile ad hoc networks are emerging distributed networks that share several similarities. Fundamental among these similarities is the decentralized role of each participating node to route messages on behalf of other nodes, and thereby, collectively realizing communication between any pair of nodes. Messages are routed on a topology graph that is determined by the peer relationship between nodes. Although routing is fairly straightforward when the topology graph is static, dynamic variations in the peer relationship that often occur in peer-to-peer and mobile ad hoc networks present challenges to routing. In this thesis, we examine the interplay between routing messages and network topology design in two classes of these networks--unstructured peer-to-peer networks and sparsely-connected mobile ad hoc networks.
