Shares of Apple stock may take another slide before the week is out as word comes that CEO Steve Jobs received 7.5 million stock options in 2001 without the required authorization of the company's board, according to a report today in the Financial Times. The British newspaper also reported that U.S. federal investigators were looking into whether records were later falsified to show those CEO options had been approved as required by law.The Times, citing unnamed sources close to the story, said the allegedly erroneous records are now being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as it ponders whether to pursue a case against Apple or any of its executives for backdating the records.Apple representatives did not return several calls for comments. However, the Times reported that company spokesperson Steve Dowling said Apple was providing details regarding the options probe to the SEC but was not discussing the matter with the public.<subhead>Stock Rollercoaster</subhead>Stock prices for the Cupertino, Calif.-based company dropped 6 percent on Wednesday when the San Francisco-based online legal newspaper, The Recorder, first reported that Jobs had hired an attorney outside of Apple's legal team to deal with potential accounting irregularities. That publication also cited unnamed sources familiar with the case. After taking an initial pounding Wednesday, the stock rebounded to close up a penny at $81.52 on the NASDAQ stock market. That rebound, which still remains steady, could be do to several factors including phenomenal sales numbers for the company's ubiquitous iPod line during the holiday season.According to the Web analytics firm Hitwise, more than four times as many people visited Apple's iTunes Web site this Christmas compared to the same time last year, signaling tremendous sales of Apple's iPod. The iTunes online store was also the fourth most visited Web site on Christmas Day.Announcement of those...

If found guilty, the South Korean electronics heavyweight could be fined or made to pay for the damages. On news of the lawsuits, Samsung's shares fell 2.24% to $662.76 on Jan. 3, while the Seoul bourse's benchmark Kospi index fell 1.81%.

Fortunately, there were enough products at the show that didn't make the "eh" list but rather look to solve some immediate problems.

Best combination of over-done gadgets: iPod-accessory maker Mophie held a contest where they asked attendees, on the first day of the show, to submit ideas for new iPod accessories; by Thursday, the company had already picked three and produced early prototypes. The best was Teresa Rivera's Montage (1.2MB PDF link), a "digital-picture frame" with a built-in iPod dock that lets you use any photo-capable iPod as the frame's source of images. You can also watch videos on the Montage's screen, listen to music via its speakers, and use its alarm clock to wake up in the morning. Although the world doesn't really need another digital-picture frame or another iPod dock, the virtual mating of the two results in clever offspring.--DAN FRAKES Disappearing acts As Macworld Lab Director, I focus on Mac hardware and peripherals. So my Expo week tends to be a blur of meeting with every exhibitor who makes scanners, displays, storage devices, and whatever other hardware you can name--a pretty time-consuming goal. This year, however, with Expo vets like WiebeTech, ATI, Kano Technologies, Granite Digital and Seagate all deciding to pass on the show, I was able to walk (and not run) through Moscone between meetings.

Among consumer gadgets, watches are an odd category. The most expensive and prestigious watches aren't the ones with the most functions or the most up-to-date chips - they're the ones that do the least, in as old-fashioned a way as possible. Just think of mechanical Rolexes.

MySpace Pumps Up Parental Controls

Online networking site MySpace has crafted a tool that will help parents get a better sense of what their children are posting on their profile pages.Even if a page is password protected, parents can use the tool to see the username, age, and location that their teenagers are using. However, not everything on a teen's page will be made available. The tool, offered free by MySpace, will not show messages posted by friends on the page, or more extensive profile information. Codenamed "Zephyr," the tool is expected to be available this summer.<subhead>Mission: Control</subhead>The development of parental control tools falls in line with other recent efforts at MySpace to protect its younger members. In December, the site struck a deal with a background-verification company, Sentinel Tech Holding, to compare user profiles with state and federal databases of sex offenders.Earlier in the year, the site hired as its chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam, a former Justice Department prosecutor who focused on child exploitation cases. Nigam has been creating new programs for MySpace, as well as other interactive media properties, that boost user education and privacy.MySpace also hired about 100 employees to handle security issues, and created an ad campaign with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to raise awareness among teenagers about the dangers of posting too much personal information in their profile pages.<subhead>Staying Aware</subhead>The breadth of controls, including the latest tool, is important because it takes several security tactics to protect children and teenagers online, said Parry Aftab, executive director of watchdog group WiredSafety, an organization that has consulted with MySpace and other social-networking sites."There's a lot more that needs to be done," she said. "But the good news is that MySpace is listening to parents' concerns and trying to put more safety policies and tools in place."MySpace has...
