Wireless broadband allows new operators to avoid the stranglehold that the incumbent carrier has on the local access market. As the telecoms market is rapidly moving in the direction of broadband, the stakes are much higher than simple telephone calls. Even if you get the incumbent's cooperation, it can take as long as six months before business customers in CBDs can be connected to a fibre network.

Consumer broadband adoption is accompanied by purchases of access points and adaptors. Wi-Fi adoption has been slower in the enterprise sector. Prices for consumer equipment have been falling faster than those for enterprise-grade systems. SOHO and consumer spending has outpaced that of enterprises.

A big factor preventing greater Wi-Fi adoption in enterprise organizations has been lack of security. 802.11i is the protocol intended to ensure Wi-Fi network security. It gives organizations a much greater level of comfort with the technology.

Fixed Mobile Convergence: Single Phone Solutions for Wireless, Wireline, and VoIP Convergence ...

Thus far in the US the substitution effect has been one way: many consumers are substituting a wireless phone for wired phone and making their wireless service their only telephone service. For local and long distance companies this trend has been disastrous--resulting in a steady decline in the customer base and revenue.

In this study, Insight examines the potential impact that the single phone with fixed and mobile capability will have on the stakeholders: local wireline carriers, long distance providers, broadband ISPs, wireless carriers, and handset vendors. This report details the technologies and marketing enablers that each stake holder segment must address to achieve a successful convergence strategy. Based upon our analysis of current international wireless-wireline convergence initiatives, Insight details how the various national communications environments are producing different models for success. The study concludes with a forecast of the market for convergence products in the US and internationally, assessing which strategies are presently the most successful.

2005 Global Mobile Communications Moving Towards 3G

High growth rates in the mobile industry have been maintained globally until the present time, but there are strong indications that the annual growth rate is slowing quite markedly. It has now stabilised just below 20%. Most of this growth is in developing countries, with Africa leading the charge. There are now 1.5 billion mobile users worldwide, growing to 2 billion by 2007.

This report provides global subscriber statistics, together with regional and country breakdowns, and forecasts of future growth.

On average, call charges are dropping by 15%-20% per annum. While several countries are still seeing high growth in new mobile subscribers, their overall revenue are also flattening, because of the drop in call charges - as well as the fact that new subscribers are, in general, low-usage customers.

As would be expected, markets with strong competition have experienced a considerable drop in mobile call charges. The others have retained declining but relatively high ARPUs. The low-priced countries have seen a levelling out of the mobile charges as they approach fixed call charges.

In the USA and Scandinavia mobile substitution has resulted in at least 50% of its voice traffic migrating to mobile. In Europe, 10%-15% of households now use mobile phones only. These countries are stimulating further growth by developing mobile value-added services.

Mobile data, content and new triple play models are discussed in a separate report: 2005 Global Mobile Data and Content Markets.

By 2005 the mobile market was worth a staggering $800billion!

2G based services have been predominantly voice-driven, with a few enhanced services (SMS), and are not widely accepted for data applications. 3G is seen by some as being the answer to this, and some companies have paid enormous sums of money to obtain spectrum to allow them to capture this market.

Other possible uses are in WLL developments and in the domestic market. However, the future of 3G also will be mainly driven by voice.

This report discusses the evolution of 3G; analyses the problems of implementation; describes the difference between 3G and the existing 2½G applications; and provides possible strategies for new players.

The most visible of all companies in the 3G market is Hutchison, with its 3 service. It has launched this service in several countries with optimistic subscriber targets, but to date these have not been met. In its attempts to win subscribers, Hutchison has attacked the high end of the market, taking share from the existing 2G and 2½G operators. This is already leading to price retaliation by the existing operators, leading to all-out price wars.

This annual report covers:
GSM, CDMA, 3G (analyses, technical issues, standards, market data), fixed-mobile substitution, Bluetooth, MVNO. Also contains industry analyses, issues and strategies, government policies, spectrum developments.

Detailed chapters on:

The future of voice
Technology information
Global overview and analysis
Trends and Developments
Marketing and Business Strategies
User statistics
Revenues, ARPU and forecasts

Positioning WiMAX - How WiMax Stands Up To DSL, Cable, Wi-Fi and 3G

This report helps operators assess the WiMax opportunity. Comparisons of WiMax, HSDPA and CDMA 1xEV-DO capabilities and availability timeframes allow mobile operators to determine the best broadband solution. Fixed operators can benchmark WiMax against other fixed wireless broadband technologies. The report also assesses the impact of the next generation WiMax, 802.16e, on mobility uses for fixed and mobile operators.

These days, WiMAX seems to be at the top of everyone's watch list and has become one of the most anticipated developments in the telecommunications world. Expectations are high for WiMAX, with the technology ultimately promising to deliver metropolitan area mobile broadband. Fact or fiction? This report looks beyond this hype to uncover the true promise of WiMAX.

In an attempt to gauge industry players' interest in WiMAX and understand their views, plans and concerns, we conducted an online survey encompassing 414 wireline and wireless operators and vendors. We then followed up with in-depth operator interviews. Survey results and feedback from operator interviews helped shape this Research's analysis of WiMAX and its prospects in both fixed wireless broadband and mobile markets as compared to other technologies including Wi-Fi, cable, DSL and 3G.

This report provides results of our online survey and operator interviews, and demand projections for 802.16d, 802.16e, Wi-Fi, cable, DSL, HSDPA, CDMA 1Xev-DO and total narrowband and broadband lines. We also examine our projections of wireline and wireless voice revenues.

Key Questions Answered

- What are the promises and shortcomings of WiMAX?
- What factors will drive WIMAX deployments by operators?
- Where will WiMAX be deployed?
- Does WiMAX pose a threat to wireline broadband?
- Does WIMAX pose a threat to 3G?
- Which customer segments will be addressed by WiMAX?
- Is WIMAX here to stay, or will it eventually peter out, like a number of other fixed wireless broadband technologies?

Who should read this report?

- Operators

This report will help operators ascertain the potential and capabilities of WIMAX and whether they should launch it. For mobile operators, the report provides a comparison of realistic availability timeframes for various technologies, and analyzes the impact that WIMAX, HSDPA and CDMA 1xEV-DO. would have on each other. For fixed operators, the report benchmarks WIMAX against other fixed wireless broadband technologies.

- Vendors

Should vendors bother with a WiMAX solution in their portfolio? This report helps ascertain where the WiMAX opportunity lies for vendors, and provides insights for product positioning, from WiMAX as a stand-alone solution to WiMAX as a complementary mobile/fixed broadband solution.

- Financial Institutions

This report helps clear the fog surrounding the purportedly disruptive effect of WiMAX on existing service providers. Are investments safe, and what does WiMAX mean for service provider long term revenue? Does WiMAX extend the service provider addressable market? This report answers such questions, and sheds some light on potential winners and losers.

Managing Mobile Services: Technologies and Business Practices

New, attractive services for communications systems are versatile and promise to make the next generation of communications a success. Yet, as the systems grow more complex and diverse, so do the challenges of managing them. Service management derives from technologies used in fixed telephony systems and has evolved towards supporting packet-based services in an increasingly open environment. It is common belief that 3G (and later 4G) services will change the way we communicate and interrelate. The user will be put at centre stage and systems will be able to handle intelligent user profiles, proactive service selection, context-aware service provisioning and ubiquitous computing. Managing, charging for, and controlling these services render traditional business models inadequate and demand new solutions. Managing Mobile Services Covers challenges, solutions and technologies for implementing IP-based services in a mobile environment, with special attention to security, flexibility and charging. Discusses business models, service management architectures and standardization efforts. Considers requirements and characteristics of services, and service modelling. Includes two case studies illustrating the challenges, technologies and solutions involved with real-world service management. This book gives telecommunications/data engineers, operators and service providers as well as students and academics an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in implementing and managing new value-added services.

Global - Broadband - Wireless - WLANs, WiFi - Overview

This report examines the development of wireless broadband from a wireless PBX technology into WLAN - a flexible data communication network that can operate as an extension to, or instead of, a wired LAN in a building. The hotspot phenomenon is discussed, as the technology moves into the consumer market. However, it remains difficult to find a good business model for this technology. The potential exists for an integrated solution in which wireless broadband operates as an alternative broadband access technology, WiMAX might fit in this scenario. The report describes developments in the technology, information is provided about key players in the market, and marketing issues.

Enterprise WiFi 2004: WLAN Switch Vendors Taking Alternate Routes to "Secure" ...

This report provides a competitive analysis of major WLAN vendors, a discussion of market opportunities, and five-year forecasts for access points, switches, gateways, and controllers, all broken down by industry.

No longer confined to coffee shops and hotel lobbies, wireless LANs have liberated corporate networks from cat 5 cables. But their growth has not been uniform -- a nurse is more likely to have used Wi-Fi at work than the health insurer who bills her patients. Millions of college students can log in to an 802.11 access point, but millions of desk workers can only do it from home. And while doing work no longer means being at work, mobility applications are often obscured by the over-analysis of .a/.b/.g developments.

Consider that:

-If security has been so inadequate, why have so many health providers embraced WLANs?

-Most clients in university Wi-Fi networks are laptops, while handhelds dominate in warehouses -- how will this impact future APs and switches?

-Some universities have one AP for every 15 students, others have one per 100 students -- why such a large discrepancy?

-If there are too many 802.11 companies, why do some startups have over 100 customers?

-Education, Health Care, and Logistics have accounted for the majority of 802.11 revenue outside the home, but how far will their share of the Wi-Fi market drop?

-Which will be more important for the future of WLANs -- meeting demand or stimulating it?

Enterprise WiFi 2004 includes a competitive analysis of major WLAN vendors, a discussion of market opportunities, and five-year forecasts for access points, switches, gateways, and controllers, all broken down by industry. Our projections are free of academic formulas, and are based on segment-specific data such as student enrollment, hospital beds, and office square footage.

The Future of MVNOs in the 3G era

With over 100 Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) launched since 1999 in Western Europe and over 30 present in the USA, mobile operators cannot ignore the impact that MVNOs are having on the market. MVNOs are taking significant market share (nearly one quarter of customers in Denmark, for example), and are increasing churn and subscriber acquisition costs in many markets. Also, because most MVNOs to date have focused on offering discounted voice services, they have increased price competition and lowered ARPU. Regulatory environments are encouraging more MVNOs in developed mobile markets, but their relationships with mobile operators are changing substantially in the new 3G era.

Wireless is thriving. The establishment of widely accepted standards means most of the technology's performance and security issues have been, or will be, ironed out. As a result, countless vendors large and small-many of them not even traditional networking companies-have been developing wireless solutions for all aspects of the corporate world. The availability of affordable, secure broadband, the development of more sophisticated handheld and laptop devices, and the resulting increase in remote workers and telecommuters have combined to make business-class wireless LANs a sector that's receiving as much recent attention as any in the IT industry.

Are MVNOs profitable? Is consolidation inevitable? The mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) model has gained in popularity over the past two to three years; more ventures have followed in Virgin's path (the model's pioneer), with the MVNO model going through a number of iterations. As the MVNO market continues to expand, a new category of players, MVNEs - mobile virtual network enablers - has emerged, riding on the coattails of strong MVNO growth.

This IDC study examines the semiconductor opportunity in WiMAX customer premise equipment (CPE), client, and infrastructure. January saw the first officially 802.16-2004 WiMAX-certified products, and the mobile 802.16e standard was ratified just at the end of 2005. A handful of major semiconductor vendors and several start-ups are looking to gain from a boom in WiMAX markets, but they are more likely to see slow and steady growth in the near future. This study examines the outlook for standard WiMAX semiconductor solutions in both fixed and mobile implementations.
"If all goes well, 2006 could be remembered as the year WiMAX became real. More fixed WiMAX networks will come online, and true mobile WiMAX trials will commence." ? Allen Leibovitch, director, Communications and Consumer Semiconductors

In line with the surging cellular subscriber numbers, the handset market also devloped quickly in the APAC region. Cutting edge mobile phones--phones integrated with various multimedia and rich-data functionalities--were increasing their share of total phones shipped in the market. With a sum of 252.3 million phones shipped in the APAC region in 2005, 53.4% had camera functions, as the plunging price of such modes in emerging markets greatly promoted their adoption. Phones with music-playing capabilities were 23.0% of phones sold; the figure is above the global average of 13.6%. Smartphones were 3.8% of the market and local design and manufacturing capacity emerged as a major driver of the adoption of smartphones in the APAC region. Mobile digital broadcasting TV phones, and cellular phones with alternative wireless broadband connectivity, were introduced to early adopters in South Korea and Japan. Other cutting edge phones, such as phones with electronic payment function and gaming-centered phones also experienced rapid growth in 2005. Towards 2009, 67.0% of mobiles sold in APAC will have a camera function while 37.3% will be able to play music. The adoption of other cutting edge functions will remain niche markets, and the marketing efforts will continue to focus on specific customer groups.

The big issues about mobile TV are whether people really want to watch television programming on a screen that small, and if so, how long will it take to happen and what exactly will the experience be like? During the research for this report, the answers to these questions have become obvious: doubt about the rise of mobile TV as a major new technology area will be swept aside by the large number of possibilities in front of the cellular and broadcasting communities. In every single trial, of video on a handset, between 60% and 85% of the audience said, "When can I buy one?" or words to that effect.

Although dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets represented only 3% of total shipments for 2006, we believe that this category will be the break-out market segment in 2007, and by 2009, will account for 20% of the total market. We believe that during the forecast period from 2007 through 2011, portable connectivity applications will drive Wi-Fi chipsets, with shipments growing because of the large growth of the mobile PC segment, the portable CE segment, and the dual-mode handset segment.
